An attractive folding map of London running from the Isle of Dogs and Greenwich in the East to a largely undeveloped Kensington, Chelsea, and Paddington in the West. Waterloo and Vauxhall Bridges are both shown as proposed improvements.

This version of Mogg's folding plan has the two extensions on the east and west, the former to illustrate the newly built docks for ships arriving from the West Indies and the East Indies, and the latter to illustrate the new developments in the areas of Chelsea, Paddington, and Kensington. Regent's Park has yet to be added to the map, though in the area of St. John's Wood there is an interesting proposal for the "British Circus", a circular development of grand houses 1 1/4 miles across with a 42 acre pleasure grounds at its centre. Unsurprisingly, this enormous development never came to fruition.

This map was first issued in 1806 and was frequently reissued to show the rapid changes taking place across London during this period. Our example is the 6th edition, published in 1812. The final edition was published more than 30 years later, in 1846, an impressive lifespan for a map, and a significant achievement for the Mogg firm. Commercial interest in this map must have been high to justify the costs of re-surveying and re-engraving every few years. From a modern perspective, this series of maps is an invaluable asset in showing year-by-year changes to the city during the late-Georgian and early-Victorian eras.
