Ethnographische Karte von Kaukasien

A fascinating ethnographic map of the Caucasus region, covering modern-day Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. Colour is used to identify 43 different ethnic groups as listed in the index in the bottom-left corner. These groups include Poles, Russians, Romanians, Germans, Kurds, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Greeks, Jews, Assyrians, Chechens, Abkhazians, and a variety of Tartar groups from the Central Asian steppes. The density and complexity of colouring shows just how diverse this region was by the late 19th century. It also speaks to today's ongoing ethnic conflicts over the disputed regions of Chechnya, Abkhazia, Ossetia, and others.
