Large nautical chart updated to show exploration until 1910, covering the coastline of eastern Antarctica in the Ross Dependency. This area is largely uncharted except for a brief outline of Cape Hudson and Peacocks Bay, the Balleny Islands and the glaciers and mountains that line the coast of Victoria Land. There is a lightly sketched ice limit, with a description of the ‘hummocky’ (mound-like) ice, and remarks of pack ice, drift ice and icebergs across the map. Also noted are approximate degrees of Magnetic Variation.
The dense tangle of routes of nine important voyages of exploration can be seen on the map, dating from the late 18th Century into the early 20th Century. These are;
- Captain’s James Cook’s second voyage aboard the HMS Resolution (1773)
- Bellingshausen’s Vostok and Mirnye (1820)
- John Bellany’s Eliza Scott and Sabrina (1839)
- The US Exploring Expedition vessels USS Vincennes, Peacock, Porpoise, and Flying Fish lead by Charles Wilkes. (1840)
- Sir James Clark Ross’ HMS Terror and (1840-41)
- Kristensen’s SS Antarctic(1894-1892)
- Borchgrevink’s Southern Cross(1898-1900)
-Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s SS Discovery(1902-1904)
- And Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod Expedition. (1908-1909)
A key to these tracks can be found in the lower left of the chart.
This chart was first issued in May 1901, and this example has been updated to 1910. [POLAR527] (SL)
