Large double-hemisphere world map showing the state of European knowledge just prior to the ground-breaking discoveries of Captain Cook. Interestingly, the antipodes of various European capitals, including Rome, Madrid, London, and Stockholm are marked on the map in the South Pacific.
During his three voyages (1768-1771; 1772-1775; 1776-1780), James Cook explored eastern Australia, circumnavigated new Zealand and the Antarctic Circle, located Hawaii and numerous other Pacific islands, and mapped the Bering Strait and the coasts of Alaska, and British Columbia. All of these important discoveries have yet to be added to Bowles's "new and accurate map" as the account of Cook's voyages was not published until 1773.
